About us...

Don and Ellen (Nicholson) Walker make their home just outside Spring City, a National Historic District in rural central Utah.  Don is a custom bootmaker – he makes hiking boots, cowboy packers, shoes and orthotic devices, as well as miscellaneous other leather items people dream up – but he especially likes making nice western dress boots, of fine leather, with fancy stitching.  Ellen is a teacher, writer and horseman.

We met in the service at Dugway Proving Grounds, where Don was a nurse in charge of the emergency room evenings and weekends, and Ellen was a finance clerk.  Shortly after we got married, we were sent to Germany, but we decided to come back to Utah when we got out of the army.

We came to Spring City in July of 1983, in search of affordable horse property away from the city, where we could raise our children and settle down.  We fell in love with the pioneer town set in a high mountain valley, and by spring of ‘85 we were able to buy a house on three acres.   By then, our boys, Matthew and Philip, were turning six and one.  For a while, Don drove truck, first locally, then over the road.  We planted trees, the boys went to school and grew, and eventually Don left the trucking business and bought a shoe & boot repair business.

Don looked at the boots he was repairing, and thought, “I could build a better boot than these.”  He found master bootmaker Randy Merrill and began taking classes.  Randy, who is a great teacher, saw that Don had a knack for working with leather, and encouraged him.  For pictures and more information about boots, click the buttons under Walker Custom Boots .

In the meantime, Ellen, who has always been interested in the sport horse disciplines of dressage, eventing and endurance, finally met one of the Hungarian horses she had first heard of around 1970 – and decided she should have one of her own.  We’ve had our first Hungarian horse for six years now, and just like them better all the time.   For pictures, general information about Hungarian horses, and horses for sale, click the buttons under Hungarian Sport Horses .
